SCIENCE MANAGEMENT RESOURCES TOOLThe North American Division S.M.A.R.T. Update, 2008, is a revision of the S.M.A.R.T. Manual, originally published in 2003. It is correlated with the new 2008 K-8 Science Curriculum Guide and the new NAD Essential Science/Health Update, Grades 5-8*. This document has been produced to respond to the needs of teachers who have been challenged to teach multi-grades. It aligns the Science Curriculum Guide topics for grades 1-4 with those of grades 5-8, allowing a teacher with any multi-grade combination to teach the same topic across levels (grades). This is accomplished by rotating instructional topics through a one- to four-year cycle, as outlined on page 5. Single grade teachers may also find the S.M.A.R.T. Update, 2008 useful when teaching science using a thematic approach, in planning school-wide science themes, and for developing spiritual applications to approach the study of science from a Biblical perspective. To assist teachers with instructional planning, S.M.A.R.T. Update, 2008 includes a cycle chart, a yearly scheduling chart, curriculum maps for grades 1-4 and 5-8, four yearly cycles of lesson plans for the lower grades (1-4), and four yearly cycles of lesson plans for the upper grades (5-8).
