Enabling Component

The ability to bring about changes in the central components often requires, or is aided by, alterations of other practices closely related to instruction. These components, called the enabling components, are climate (learning environment, diversity, customer service), educational technology, time utilization, and partnerships.

Climate
School personnel will focus on providing a climate in both the school and classroom that is invitational --positive, safe, nurturing, and that celebrates diversity. The Adventist school that is striving for excellence will also provide a helpful, friendly atmosphere and work to create goodwill through outstanding customer service.

Learning Environment
The learning environment in an Adventist EDGE school provides an atmosphere that is positive, safe, and nurturing and allows for:

· a frequent exchange of ideas between teacher and students and student

Diversity
The Adventist EDGE school will recognize that individuals come from diverse backgrounds and will demonstrate a respect for diversity and teach that acceptance leads to unity through the love of Jesus.

Adventist EDGE schools will promote an environment that appropriately celebrates the diversity found among God’s children and will employ instructional methods which are sensitive to diversity.

Customer Service
An Adventist EDGE school highly values its customers, the parents and students. Also, it strives to provide excellent services, works to create goodwill, and seeks to build exemplary relationship with its customers through:

Educational Technology
Exemplary schools will develop a master plan to address the needs of educational technology for preparing students to live, learn, and work successfully in today's knowledge-based digital society. They will also budget funds to upgrade and maintain current and emerging educational technologies including hardware and software for instruction, Internet access, teacher-parent communication links, distance learning and staff development.

Time Utilization
Time during the school day will be flexible to accommodate integrated instruction, team teaching, block scheduling and mastery learning. Time during the school year will be allocated to provide opportunity for teachers to participate in on-going professional growth activities.

Partnerships
School leaders and teachers in an Adventist EDGE school will forge communication links to:develop a strong three-way partnership between the home, school, and churches which promotes and supports Christian education; involve parents, constituents, and the community in school improvement initiatives, i.e. through EDGE parent seminars The Parent Workshop foster partnerships with local community organizations which will encourage opportunities such as community-based learning and projects, work experience, financial grants, internships, and career awareness; click for an example of how this can be done, cooperate with home-schooling parents and their children, neighboring schools, and other educational entities.
